Job purpose

This is a 1 – 2 year training programme. During which time trainees will work in the specified areas of the Collection and Housing Benefits service to develop competence and gain work experience.

The post may work in all sections in the service as required for training purposes or to meet organisational needs. Additionally post holders will be expected to work at Harrow Contractor offices and voluntary organisations’ local offices. At the end of the programme trainees will be competent in one area of activity and have knowledge and of the others areas.

Main duties and responsibilities

To develop the competence and achieve acceptable standards of performance in assisting G3 to G6 Officers in carrying out the administration of Revenues and Benefits, Cashier, Parking ticket processing and system functions.

  3. To promote and participate in the council’s investors in people (IIP) and individual performance appraisal and development initiatives and information management best practice.
  4. To ensure compliance with the council’s information security policies and maintain confidentiality.
  5. In accordance with the Immigration Act 2016, where the role is customer-facing and the post holder is required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
  6. To meet specified performance standards in relation to quality, output and customer service.
  7. General
  8. To develop skills and knowledge to assist Officers in their day to day duties as appropriate to the service in which you work.
  9. To develop skills across all aspects of the service by working in all sections of the service as required
  10. To attend College and/or appropriate on the job training as may be required
  11. To undertake formal performance assessment as required
  12. To handle queries from customers, on the telephone and in writing
  13. To use IT, telephony and workflow systems to source information and maintain full accurate records
  14. Systems Administration
  15. Assist in the provision of first level support, service delivery functions and deliver continuous improvement and maximise capacity of systems to improve efficiency within the service areas.
  16. Assist in the running of revenues online and batch processing and use appropriate interrogation tools to produce reports.
  17. Assist in setting up security and access rights for Northgate users
  18. On a daily basis, count and prepare parking bullion for collection by external contractor
  19. Assist in emptying payment Kiosks. Sort and count the cash and reconcile to the Kiosk report daily.

Skills required

· Experience in a customer service environment · 2 A levels and 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above including Maths and English · Good interpersonal skills · Good communication skills · Able to adapt to different working environments · Able to use a range of different IT applications to source and accurately record information

Training provided

You will receive an in-depth induction, comprehensive on the-job-training and you will also work towards a Business Administration level 3 qualification.

Trainees will be required to pass performance, competence and knowledge assessments as part of each probation review at specified intervals. Trainees will study for an appropriate NVQ or other qualification as may be required.
